Empowering Birth Affirmations To Calm Your Mind

30+ affirmations for a peaceful birth

Whatever kind of birth experience you’re hoping for – a natural birth, a home birth, using hypnobirthing techniques, getting an epidural, being induced etc. – I think we can all agree that what we want most is a positive birth experience. If you’re like me and you love to be prepared for literally any situation, you’re probably feeling anxious about all the unknowns that come with giving birth! I’m right there with you girl.

So here’s the game plan: No matter far you are into your pregnancy, it’s time to start getting your mind right for the big day.

One of the best things I’ve been doing: Affirmations.

BENEFITS OF GOING INTO LABOR & DELIVERY WITH A POSITIVE MINDSET

Hear me out, even if you feel like affirmations are a little woo woo, there is actually a lot of science behind them and the impact they can have. For example, reciting affirmations keeps negative thoughts at bay, boosts your self-esteem, and can even promote better heart health!

At 35 weeks pregnant, my main goal for listening to, reading and reciting birth affirmations is to ingrain them into my subconscious. Then, when I’m in the thick of labor & delivery, I can easily recall the calming mantras to self-soothe. Don’t get me wrong, I’m definitely planning to get that epidural, but there’s no harm in doing what I can to ease the discomfort before then!

Check out these benefits of having a positive mindset in birth:

  • Reduced fear and anxiety
  • Increased confidence and empowerment
  • More feelings of relaxation
  • Can be used as a pain management tool

AND, this is pretty cool, according to BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth:

“Women with increased self-efficacy experience less fear and pain and more satisfaction with birth compared to women with low self-efficacy.”

INCORPORATING AFFIRMATIONS IN YOUR DAILY ROUTINE

Here’s the thing about affirmations – they are more effective when you’ve spent time reallyyyy getting them into your head. Therefore, we need to plan ahead & hop on the affirmation train like, right now!

These are my favorite ways to incorporate these positive mantras into my daily routine.

  • Listening to them during my commute (you can find videos on YouTube, though I personally use the audio from the book Your Baby, Your Birth by Hollie de Cruz, which I highly recommend!
  • Recite them (out loud or even just in your head) while you’re cooking, getting ready for the day, when you’re cleaning – anytime you’re doing something tedious.
  • Write, write, write! I’m a BIG journaling girl. Something about putting pen to paper makes me so happy, so why not combine it with some positive affirmations.
  • Read affirmations before you go to bed (Did you know you’ll have better recall of things that are studied right before bed? Get reading!)
  • My personal favorite, if you’re a crafty gal like me – Make cute little print outs of the affirmations to post around your house! I love seeing the little reminders without having to even really think about it.
